In West Jordan, Utah, the town of nearly 7,000 residents sits on a ridgeline overlooking the Wasatch Mountains. The land was first inhabited by Native Americans in what is now Utah. West Jordan, Utah is a town located in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah. The population was 5,836 at the 2010 census. West Jordan is part of the Ogden–Clearfield, UT Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered by Park City to the north and east, North Ogden to the south and west, and Spanish Fork to the northwest. The first people who lived in what is now West Jordan were Paiutes. They were displaced by Ute Indians in 1847 and eventually died out. In 1881, Brigham Young came toUtah from Nauvoo, Illinois with his small group of Mormons. He established a church here and named it Zion because he desired a place where all God's children could find safety and rest after traveling through difficult times in Missouri and Illinois. Brigham Young also built an unfinished temple here that served as his home until he died in 1896. In 1924, John Wirthlin bought 1/4 mile of land northeast of present-day West Jordan for $3 per acre from Jens Jensen for use as a farmstead for himself and his family. He began building what became known as Wirthlin Farm on this property in 1929. Wirthlin was one of many early pioneers who used their own resources (crops, livestock) rather than relying on government assistance or donations during World War II to help fund Operation Overlord; however, most members of his family perished in that war effort including his father-in-law Horace Mann Wirthlin (1889-1980).
