The town was founded in 1872 by Mormons who had followed Brigham Young to American Fork Cathedral Hill in central Utah. Mormon pioneers built a stockade around what is now downtown West Jordan and began farming there. In 1877, Joseph Smith received an angel's directive to begin preaching a gospel message directly to members of the LDS Church in America rather than through western missionaries who were then traveling throughout the Great Plains. A group of West Jordan men traveled northeast on I-15 to Salt Lake City and preached from Temple Square before returning home on October 15, 1877. They named their new settlement after President George Washington Smith, father of Brigham Young and founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). By 1890, when polygamy became illegal in Utah under state law, West Jordan had become one of the most populous Latter Day Saint settlements in America with over 12,000 residents. In 1903–1904, construction began on Zion National Park which includes much of today's downtown West Jordan including its first post office building designed by architect Alfred Vail and completed in 1905. A park containing natural resources such as waterfalls and lakes was also established near present day Ogden Air Force Base during this time period for recreational use only. In 1909–1910,[4] Waco Mercantile Exchange Building opened on Main Street within sight of today's KFC restaurant;[5] that same year saw completion[6]of Central Power & Light Company's first major electric power plant providing electricity for all tenants within walking distance.[7][8] In 1911,[9] Zion National Park was enlarged by adding Mount Carmel which became part of Bears Ears National Monument after it was donated by Royce Lumber Co., owner (and president)of Cedar Mesa Landfill located adjacent to present day South End Mall across State Avenue from Union Station railroad yards.[10][11][12][13][14] Waco Mercantile Exchange Building closed shop due to economic conditions following World War II; however local officials continue marketing events there as "WacoMercEx" until its closure effective December 1st 1984[15].
