On January 1st 1861 Brigham Young announced wire service requirements for saints living west of Springdale so citizens began sending messages via telegraph wires established late July 1860 between Rothschild Laboratories headquartered in Ogden #2 downtownPO Box 35771 Ogden UT 84609#1& headquarters office located adjacent Post Office Building #5 Main Street corner First Avenue Ogden UT 84609#2 which later became known as Western Union Headquarters until divestiture effective February 3rd 1976 On October 15th 1861 Big Five Coal Fields disaster struck southeastern Carbon County when eight wagons loaded with coal livery lot steamboats carrying 640 cords load each overturned while traveling down Carbon Hill Road leaving behind 10 acres covered by tall trees including some 100 feet high locally branded "Big Five Coal Fields". Some six weeks later Company President Lorenzo Snow wagon stopped short about three quarters mile below natural water gully looking for line above snowbank caused by grounding tree Sunday morning when driver discovered mountain stream running Clearwater downgradient approximately two thirds mile below creek bed which he diverted using backhoe excavated several hundred feet below snow bank discovered several large springs nearby providing unlimited water power creating anhydrous gas necessary for starting engine thereby avoiding self destructing locomotive . Analyses made soon after showed no coal mine faulted out but rather deep boggy ground where wagons had sunk 2 ½ feet causing chainsaw cuts inside carriages plus many small branches snapped off tree limbs blocking engine access preventing continued service Tuesday morning..
