The town was founded in 1878 by John Wesley Powell and his family as a station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route between Great Britain and California. In 1889, Brigham Young established the West Jordan Agricultural and Mechanical College in what is now West Jordan. In 1902, Westbrooks ville (now called downtown) was named after George Westbrook who had donated land to the town for development. The first post office opened in 1903. West Jordan became an incorporated municipality on July 1, 1912. On December 12 of that year, Mayor J H Woolley dedicated the new municipally built library which still stands today at 610 S Main Street In 1975-1976 the city renovated its water system and re-named it "Waterfront Park" According to the 2010 census, West Jordan has a population of 4,392 people making it one of Utah's most populous cities with over half its population living within 5 miles of downtown or within 10 miles of any major airport or shopping center

West Jordan, Utah is a town in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The name "West Jordan" was given to the town by General David W. Haight after he discovered it while scouting for a site for his new military post in Kane County in 1847. In 1882, Brigham Young foundedTSU (The Saint Utes) School District No. 1 in West Jordan and named it after himself as one of thirteen districts of the LDS Church organized on April 6, 1881. East Jordan Township was created from parts of West Jordan on November 3, 1916 and annexed into West Jordan on October 15 that same year; this annexation removed portions of EastJordan which had Lighthouse Hill Elementary School and Ned's Store businesses from within WestJordan limits. The community has experienced several significant events over its history: In 1896, when Brigham Young designated Mount Carmel Cemetery as the final resting place for Saints killed during the Black Hawk War (1867-1868), many families chose to bury their loved ones there rather than move away from Mormon settlements due to fear of attack by Native Americans living near these sites. As a result, Mount Carmel Cemetery quickly became one of the largest religious cemeteries in Utah with more than 12,000 residents buried there at its peak in 1951. On November 3rd 1916 an annexation took place between parts of West Jordan which were then called EastJordan Township and part of Logan County known as Kane County; this annexation removed chunks outtaEastJordanwhich had Lighthouse Hill Elementary School and Ned's Store businesses from within WestJordanlimits; this event helped spur development around both towns with additional homes being built in what are now areas such as North Park and South Park Avenues while also giving people access to larger open spaces within those towns today thanks to Stonington Drive running through all three villages today).
