Today, Zion Park remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in Utah—not just because it's beautiful but also because it offers dozens of unique exhibits about Mormon life and history."
In 1847, the United States Congress authorized President James K. Polk to purchase land in what is now Utah Territory for the purpose of forming a new country. The president designated 6 square miles (15 km2) of this land as the capital of Utah Territory, and began negotiations with Native American leaders to purchase title to it from them. In February 1850, after several months of negotiation, Polk finally acquired exclusive title to 1,500 acres (600 km2) of land east of the Great Salt Lake in what is now West Jordan Township. This area would later become part of Deseret City.
