West Jordan, Utah was founded in 1902 by the Latter-day Saints. It became a city in 1912 and was named for John A. The City has been through many political changes throughout its history, most notably during the 1994 Winter Olympics when it unsuccessfully bid to host the event. The first settlers in what is now West Jordan were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who arrived there from Ohio in 1847. Mormon pioneers Jacob Hamblin and Martin handcartloads arrived at what is now West Jordan on December 17th, 1847 and camped until January 6th, 1848. On January 11th, 1848, Brigham Young issued a proclamation that women could not be baptized or ordained as LDS missionaries because they were not “wise as men” according to Mosiah 7:21-27. However this proclamation did not take effect until after President Young's death on April 15th due to lack of fulfillment from his successor Brigham Young Jr.. By 1850 polygamy was legalized within The Church by revelation from President Joseph Smith which allowed for plural marriage between men and women if both parties agreed thereto. When Salt Lake City was founded on October 24th, 1896 it included parts of present day West Jordan as well as Laytonville and Springdale but only Laytonville incorporated into Salt Lake City on February 14th 1901 while Springdale remained unincorporated until 1941 when it too incorporation into Salt Lake City with all its land becoming part of the city limits). In 1912 WJLH (now KSL) began broadcasting from the East Building on North Temple Street which also served as the municipal courthouse at this time; however KSL would move their studios to their current location within walking distance of downtown by 1964 however WJLH still broadcasts today from their original building with new digital audio/visual enhancements that include high definition video & sound! After years struggles against mountain ranges making access difficult for transportation and development efforts throughout much OF Utah Valley including Beaver Dam & Cedar Hills (west), Provo Canyon (north), Shephard Hills (south) FAIRfax Mineshaft #5 located east side near modern day Murray State University opened up prospects formining west side hills resulting in large families moving out onto these hills beginning around 1920s some going so far away they never saw their homes again other kids grew up without ever seeing their mothers or fathers again….overlooking more important things like school starting early….. anyways lets get back to my point about how our great city got started huh? After much pleading & struggle by citizens WWJD acquiesced finally giving ushood Land stretching NW corner lot measuring 1 acre bounded on sides by high mountains w/NNW river view atop same lot 8x6 feet 3x2 feet watered daily with hose before mowing fields w’d 5 days a week keeping cattle close enough so “milk cows” wouldn’t cross rivers several times each day getting deeper every year caused some protest but eventually we got good water rights right next door [to South Jordan]
