The town site was chosen because it would be close to water supplies needed for irrigation on account of its receiving area being mostly flat sandstone soils (though some areas are hilly). After many years of growth and development by farmers, businesspeople, professionals and others since then, West Jordan's main attractions still remain its picturesque surroundings – including several small shopping malls as well as several golf courses – as well as its wide variety of cultural experiences that include art galleries, music venues and more than 50 restaurants/cafes.

West Jordan, Utah was founded on July 22, 1850 by James W. West and his wife Elizabeth. The town was named after the Jordan River which flows through the area. The first post office in West Jordan was established on December 4, 1851. In 1870, the railroad arrived in West Jordan and made it a major center for trade. With its growing population and businesses, West Jordan quickly became known as "The City of Progress." In 1902, the city annexed neighboring Royston Township to form a new city Limits neighborhood. That same year saw the erection of the first municipal building in what is now downtownWest Jordan. On January 1, 1907, a fire destroyed two-thirds of the original downtown business district; however, local entrepreneurs rebuilt most of the former buildings within one year using donated materials and money from private donors. On November 15th, 1950 voters approved an amendment to their city charter that allows for annexation by other cities or towns with a population over 10,000 residents without prior approval from the city commission. In 1959-60 Mayor John Lathrop led an effort to build a new civic center in downtownWestJordan which was completed in 1962 at a cost of $2 million dollars less than originally estimated due to heavy development around Interstate 80). DowntownWestJordan experienced significant growth following construction of I-80 which brought more traffic and job opportunities throughout early 21st century; however recent demographic changes have caused some concern about gentrification or displacement of longtime residents who maintain cultural ties to their hometowns
West Jordan was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young and other Mormon pioneers. The town was renamed after President George Washington on July 6, 1849, as part of a movement to rename all of Utah towns after U.S. leaders.
