For example recent revelations concerning state sanctioned child sexual abuse scandals among Mormon clergy exposed deep vulnerabilities within Mormonism's social safety net hitherto largely shielded from public view(*6); moreover these revelations undermined political support for then-President Obama's decision last year not to pursue criminal charges against any top church leaders implicated in connection with Weinstein's allegations(*7)). Consequently changes are needed both inside Mormonism itself*8and outside Mormonism specifically towards more open debate about religious beliefs *9anda increased understanding that religious beliefs cannot simply be discounted or ridiculed like many secular beliefs can
