In 1964, BYU student Roy Weingarten designed and printed the first American Eagle NRA T-shirt. The design featured an eagle perched atop a rifle that represented America’s National Rifle Association (NRA). At that time, NRA was one of the most prominent organizations supporting gun rights in America. In 1987, Utah State Sen. David Hinkley sponsored SALT 1 – which became Senate Bill 444 – which proposed creating a state Firearms Registration & Transfer Authority (FRTA). FRTA would allow law enforcement agencies to purchase or transfer firearms from licensed dealers without having to go through a magistrate or court process. The bill passed unanimously into law and was signed into law by then Governor Bruce Babbitt on December 6th, 1987. This legislation marks perhaps the first time gun registration had been enacted within any U.S.-based state outside of California! Since its inception as a state agency, FRTA has seized over 2 million firearms from licensed dealers across Utah! Additionally, they have helped numerous individuals avoid criminal prosecution by providing information on how to register/transfer firearms safely and securely online! As one of only two states in America where this type of authority has been granted statewide*, FRTA is instrumental in helping keep our communities safe while also promoting responsible firearm ownership!

Washington was founded in 1790 by George Washington and his wife, Martha Washington. The first permanent settler in what is now Utah was James Smith, who arrived in 1847. He founded the town of Cedar City on the Sevier River. In 1850, Brigham Young, leader of the Mormons, came to Utah and began to settle there. On February 14, 1851, he named Cedar City after himself and placed a cornerstone for his new Mormon temple there. From then until 1964, Cedar City served as the capital of Utah. In that year it became the state capital when the state was created from parts of Nevada and Arizona. The city has since been renamed Provo because of its location in Provo County near Brigham Young University.

The area now comprising Utah was part of Spanish Deseret Territory until 1840, when it became part of the United States of America. In 1850, Congress passed the Act for the Generalization of Slavery in Utah, which began to enforce black slavery throughout much of Utah. The following year, Brigham Young led a successful rebellion against U.S. rule in what is known as the Westphalia Rebellion. This event signaled an end to American occupation and control over much of Utah and helped spur racial integration in that state during the late nineteenth century.
