Tooele grew rapidly as a result of its location on Hwy 89, which crossed through what is now Tooele into Weber County. The first post office was established in 1870, and by 1881, Tooele had become one of the largest towns in Weber County with a population of over 100 people. In 1909, Tooele acquired lands east of US-89 that made it an addition to the city limits. Growth continued until World War II when the war created massive demand for housing and jobs in downtown Tooele. Today, downtown has sizable residential areas as well as several professional buildings used by local businesses and government entities.

Tooele, Utah is a small town in Weber County, Utah. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Tooele River, about 15 miles (24 km) east of Ogden and about 25 miles (40 km) south of downtown Salt Lake City. The town was founded in 1887 by Brigham Young and his family. It became a city in 1935, but it reverted to its rural status until it became a town again in 1990. One of the first businesses in Tooele was a store run by Wm. Hurlbut and Bros., which opened on October 8, 1887. At that time, there were only 10 people living in the village; today there are over 1,000 residents. The first post office was established at Tooele on November 17, 1888; it operated for six years before being moved to Ogden. In 1890 the railroad arrived and soon began providing transportation to various villages within Weber County; consequently, business grew rapidly for the local merchants. In 1893 two stores were built: one by A J Riddle and Son and the other by E P Olsen & Sons Incorporated (now part of Macy’s). These stores quickly became well known throughout the county as leaders in their respective fields- retail trade being what made this area so prosperous during those early days of development hereabouts! Today’s incarnation of Tooele goes back to its roots as an agricultural center with some sawmilling activity taking place along with corn shelling operations conducted from ponds near Main Street during those early days when irrigation techniques were still primitive! But we can forget all that now because our focus should be squarely upon our namesake – Brigham Young himself who declared this community “the Place Whereon My Feet Shall Stand When I Leave This World!” Latter-day Saints first started arriving during 1880 when wagon trains bringing supplies brought Mormon pioneers westward from Nauvoo Illinois en route to winter stockade at Mountain Meadows Ranch (now Salt Lake City). Many families chose to come here instead of moving into Nauvoo because they wanted assurances that they would not be driven out or persecuted should hostilities break out between Mormonsand non-Mormons living nearby– something that did not happen very often given how peaceful most Cache Valley settlements had been up until then! And so began what has become one of Mormonism’s proudest accomplishments: The establishment of one continuous American settlement outside Of Great Britain!!! As Church members migrated westward over more than fifty years they left behind scores – if not hundreds – OF THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS HERE IN OUR COMMUNITY OF TOOELE!!! Today we continue THAT RECORDbreaking tradition!!
Tooele was founded by Captain James O. Woolley in 1871, during the time of the Great Utah Expedition. The town was named for General Tooele, who led the expedition. The first store in Tooele opened on December 15, 1871. The town had a population of only 10 people when it was founded, but it grew rapidly and reached a peak of 100 people in 1915. By 1930, Tooele had shrunk to its current size, but it continues to be a popular tourist destination.
