Tooele, Utah is a census-designated place in Tooele County, Utah, United States. The population was 5,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The name "TOOELE" originated from an Otoe word meaning "watercourse." The first permanent settler in what is now Tooele County was James Waddell in 1847. In 1851, A.C. Mills and his brother built a log cabin on the south side of the Jordan River near present day Woolridge Dam. They named their new settlement after they found gold there in 1850 - Tomahawk Hill (now known as Mills Landing). In 1861, Brigham Young called all Latter-day Saints to assemble at Mill Creek campground on November 17th for reorganization into stakes or districts under direction of Young. By 1870 the town had applications for land from 21 families and by 1880 it had acquired its current site with 6 blocks of land along Jordan River east of State Street and 12 blocks west of Main Street extending to present day Cottonwood Heights neighborhood northward to I-80 and eastward to Cottonwood Heights northwestward to State Street and eastward past Woolridge Dam back upriver where it joined up with Springdale about 3 miles upstream from today's town limits; this would make TOOELE the largest city within Cannon Ball Indian Reservation which at that time included Mitchell Ranch (the aboriginal boundaries now defined by Cedar Mesa neighborhoods) In 1886 Samuel Gibbs immigrated from Wales with his family and began farming hereabouts until he lost his farm during a drought years later while living near Loganville on Beaver Creek Valley Road next door to Gee's General Store & Post Office buildings still standing today just inside Cannon Ball Indian Reservation limits between Cedar Mesa & Springdale neighborhoods today marked by stoplights at intersections served by I-80 southbound & U S Route 50 northbound going through Cedar Mesa; one can only imagine how those early days must have been like when most people lived off hunting & fishing opportunities open only 8 hrs/day during summer months only accessible overland due mainly to snowmobiling operations required 4 hrs/day access across country then 2 hr/day via wheeled vehicles down mountain roads following trails available only during winter months ....
