Tooele is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Tooele was John Dickey in 1847. The town was named after General Oliver O'Callaghan and his brigade who fought at Battle of Cedar Point on July 6, 1847. A post office called Tooele was established in 1850, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1862 Brigham Young organized the Mormon Battalion which served as a scouting unit during the American Civil War under General Grant's command. In 1865 to 1870 John W apostles arrived to preach the gospel and start a new branch of Christianity called Zion's Camps (later renamed Springdale). They erected two small churches; one near Seventh Avenue and Iron Mine Road (now Hwy 84) and another on State Street east of downtown (now Main Street).
