Tooele, Utah is a small town in Tooele County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City-Provo-Orem metropolitan area. The name "Tooele" comes from the Paiute word for "place where the water is clear." The town was founded in 1868 as a result of gold discoveries near present day Tooele by James Waddell and his nephew Brigham Young. In 1870, construction began on what would become Tooele Seminary which served both LDS Church members and non-LDS students until it merged with Brigham Young University in 1913. The downtown core of Tooele retains many early pioneer buildings including the Post Office (1868), Masonic Temple (1870), Oregon Barracks (1872), Joseph Fenton's Store (1876) and Sperry Opera House (1914). In 1907, to help promote agricultural production in the area, Governor George Albert Smith established an Agricultural Experiment Station in Tooele which continues to be a major player in local agriculture to this day. A new hospital was built in 1961 and still serves as one of Tooele's principal functions today - providing medical care to residents and visitors alike. Numerous other businesses have also been developed over time around the central square - giving life to what once functioned more as an agricultural backwater than today's thriving community center. Today there are several restaurants and cafes within walking distance of most homes while large shopping malls are located just outside of town on I-15 or US Highway 12 eastbound access off US 191/US Route 89 westbound access. Schools within minutes' drive include Brigham Young University-Hawaii Campus; Utah Valley College; Utah State University; Weber State University; Eastern Arizona College & Hospital; American River College & Hospital .
