Tooele is a city in Utah, United States. The population was 20,883 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tooele County. The city's name comes from a Paiute word meaning "to live happily." The first inhabitants of what is now Tooele were Ute Indians. A fort was built there by Captain James Waddy in 1837 and named Fort Bridger after the Hbert River where he had been stationed as a military commander during the Mexican-American War. In 1847, Brigham Young founded the Mormon Battalion here to fight for Joseph Smith and his successor, Brigham Young Jr., against Mexican forces in what became known as the Battle of Leavenworth Hill. The town was laid out by George Fenton on December 24, 1853, and it soon starts to grow; today it has an estimated population of over 25,000 people. A post office called Tooele was established in 1854, and remained open until 1907. The current name of the city came about because most residents thought that "toe" referred to an Indian pathfinder named Tomahawk who had found new land west of the Great Salt Lake Valley while exploring for pioneers in 1855-56. Mayor Harry Jorgensen put together a committee to come up with a more permanent name for the town when he took office in 1957; their final choice was Tooele because it sounded like someone's nickname (elder Jorgensen being particularly proud of this). The local economy has largely been based on agriculture since its founding; although manufacturing has increased recently with some light industry such as lumberjacks clearing forestland for pulpwood or mobile homes making use of nearby sites such as Iron Mountain Arsenal which once produced cannons and other artillery pieces used by America during World War II
