Tooele, Utah is a city located in Tooele County, Utah, United States. The population was 579 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City–Provo Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Tooele" comes from the place where Mormon pioneers first settled in 1847 and named their new town after John Wesley Toole, an American lawyer and judge who had been instrumental in helping to create Utah Territory. The city became a stop on the old Oregon Mail Railway which connected Ogden with Beaumont, Texas; Perryville with St George; Provo with Orem; and Logan with Salt Lake City. The railroad closed in 1957 and all trains stopped running except for occasional freight trains that hauled potatoes from Millcreek to Fillmore until 1991 when they were acquired by Southern Railway Company. The first post office was established at Tooele on March 12, 1851, by Arent Crouse and James Waddell. In 1860 it was moved to its present location at 309 S Main Street. At that time there were only three families living in Tooele: the Green family of five children (Moses, Mary Ann (Ann), Willie, Howard (Hank)), Everett Dickey of Beaver Valley (Dicky Dickey), his wife Fannie (Fannie) Clarke of Cedar Rapids ( Clarissa Belle Hardesty ), two men named Smith who came overland from Illinois in 1850 as part of Brigham Young's wagon train under Hyrum Smith and also two women- Maria Anderson and Sarah Bidwell- both born about 1840 near Council Bluffs Iowa Territory before their husbands' departures for California during the California Gold Rush. There are no known descendants or successors of these pioneer families today other than through marriage or adoption

The name "Tooele" comes from 'tow' meaning stream or rivulet in Utah Navajo language, which is probably derived from Arapaho word "yotwah," meaning place where water flows easily (the Wichita Mountains are upstream). This would make sense as early pioneers traveled down this valley searching for new land to settle because there were no other streams near their cabin sites other than those that ran through nearby Cache Valley or lower Jordan Valley which they had to cross on foot or horseback time-wise. So when they found this beautiful valley with its many creeks – now known as Tooele Creek – they named their settlement after it!
