Tooele, Utah is a town in Southern Utah county and it's located on the Wasatch Front. The population of Tooele was 9,591 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Ogden-Clearfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Tooele was George Davenport who arrived in 1847. Davenport named his new land Tooele after his home town at Mullen, Maine. A post office was established in 1848, and by 1870 there were seventeen residents living in the community. In 1862, John Sutter discovered coal to be had near Tooele so he started mining operations which led to an increase in population and commercial buildings being erected along Main Street during this time period. In 1912 Gentry Wimmer organized a group that purchased 8 acres of land east of downtown from US$1 per acre to erect a Agricultural Experiment Station (later renamed University Park). Wimmer served as its first director and developed it into what is now known as Wimmer Hall on campus today (). The millinery store built by him along Center Street also remains standing today. Around this time too many businesses closed down due to prohibition so Bridgeport Oil & Gas Company was founded with three wells on Main Street to provide fuel for their gas lamps until 1914 when oil became available more cheaply from North Dakota. During World War I construction began on Fort Douglas Railway Station just northeast of downtown which would later become known as Ben Lomond Arsenal complex (). When the war ended all civilian activity ceased and Forney County began providing military personnel with housing () until 1919 when all troops were discharged (). After hostilities stopped most people returned back home but some families remained behind while various industrial plants were built such as Rexall Paper Mill (), Joplin Pipe Works (), American Metal Company (), Utah Fuel & Iron Works (), Salt Lake City Steelworks ()) during this time period(). In 1925 James Ewing moved his photographic equipment from Provo, UT to begin manufacturing Kodachrome film here (). Today much of these factory remnants still remain visible including Rexall Paper Mill’s original warehouse building () which still stands vacant although renovated over the years
