Tooele is a city in and the county seat of Tooele County, Utah, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The name "Tooele" originated from the Ojo de la Cruz Rancho de los Angeles Indian Reservation on which it was founded in 1847 by Mormon settlers. The first permanent settler in Tooele was John Dibble in 1847. Dibble named his farm "Ojo de la Cruz" after Mount Ojo, about 2 miles (3 km) south of where Tooele now stands. In 1850, Brigham Young's First Battalion arrived at Ojo de la Cruz and built a small log cabin here as their winter quarters. On January 6, 1851, President Brigham Young ordained twelve men to establish a church here with headquarters at Santa Clara Mission near present-day Laytonville. The first building erected by these Twelve Apostles were two small huts that still stand today on Main Street near where Waconda High School is located today. By 1861, over sixty buildings had been built around what became downtown Tooele; this included both private homes and public buildings such as the county courthouse and jail. In 1865 Latter-day Saint refugees seeking refuge from Missouri forced their way into central Utah via General Grant's Expedition through western Juab County; many Saints also took up arms against Federal troops during this period known as the Colorado War or Black Hawk War. After being driven out of Cheyenne Mountain by Ulysses S Grant's forces in November 1868 following an eight-month siege, some Mormons returned to central Utah but others continued to fight for passage across Union lines into Kansas Territory (later Nebraska). One group led by James M Lee reached Valentine Hill on February 15th 1870 just before Union cavalry attacked leading to the Battle of Valentine Hill which resulted in five killed and twenty injured Mormon soldiers under Captain George A Cook including future LDS president Orson Pratt who later recounted: "I saw Captain Cooks fall upon our enemies like lions without mercy." Aftermath of battle: Confederate general Robert E Lee ordered his cavalryTO attack while Ulysses S Grant watched from an hilltop nearby; resulted in 5 dead Mormons along with 20+ wounded soldiers found dead or mortally wounded atop Valentine Hill
