Taylorsville, Utah is home to the oldest continuous white settlement in the Salt Lake Valley. The town was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young and his men after they overlanded from Nauvoo, Illinois. Taylorsville quickly became a thriving agricultural center, with production of wheat, oats, corn, cotton and other crops. By 1870 Taylorsville had become a community of about 200 people. The first gun flashlights were designed and marketed by George Burgess in 1922 as an improved version of a Chinese lantern flashlight. In 1924 Burgess developed the first self-contained digital weapon flashlight which could be used while wearing gloves. A year later he introduced the original Cree LED weapon flashlight which remained popular until it was replaced by newer models in 2009. Taylorsville is a town in Wasatch County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Taylorsville is named after Captain James Tayloe and his party of mules which reached the Promontory on July 14, 1847. The town was founded by John W. Taylor in 1854 as a Mormon Settlement on the east side of the Sevier River. It was located near what is now Midvale and Cottonwood Heights. In 1870 it incorporated as a municipality; Taylorsville had a population of 3,000 in 1880 and 5,000 by 1910. The first post office at Taylorsville was established on November 8, 1854; it continued to be called Taylor until 1865 when it changed its name to Sevier City to avoid confusion with nearby Salt Lake City which had been renamed Provo two years earlier. By 1860 there were only about 100 people living in TaylorsVILLE; by 1920 there were over 10,000 residents and 7 businesses in the small town of less than one square mile (0.4 km²). When World War II began in 1939 most residents evacuated during the war but returned later when hostilities ended During World War II many jobs were created for local citizens involved with production of munitions such as plastics and shipbuilding In 1964 major changes took place in Taylorsville when the community moved from its rural setting into an all-city status which included both residential development within town limits and commercial zoning that allowed for more than one business per block In 1998 renovations started to remove all traces of WWII combat from downtown including demolition of buildings built as barracks and other command posts
