In 1853, American Colonel John Cordon discovered a small ranch called Taylor Ranch in Taylorsville. He decided to establish himself there and started to stock up on guns. A few years later, he organized a militia company and named it The Taylorsville Riflemen. In 1868, General George Crook arrived in Utah Territory and began his campaign against Mexico. He needed all the help he could get and set up camp at Taylor Ranch. One of his first orders was to arm some local farmers with rifles so they could fight back against Mexican forces if necessary. Soon after, other American troops followed suit and began engaging in combat with Mexican forces. This situation quickly escalated into a full-blown war! In 1870, general Crook ordered his soldiers to storm Mexico City while he continued fighting inside Mexico itself. Amazingly, they were able to achieve this beforeMexican General Santa Anna even had timeto mobilize his army! Aftermath: More than 50 thousand Mexicans died or were taken prisoner during this conflict; over two hundred US citizens also lost their lives due to military action (the majority being soldiers). Aftermath: The US victory allowed for further immigration into Utah Territory and increased pressure on Mexico which eventually ledto its collapse in 1848
