A post office was established at Taylorsville on July 8, 1858, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on July 1, 1916. In 1902, John W. Taylor donated land to build BYU-Hawaii campus. In 1910 the school became known as Brigham Young University–Hawaii (BYU-H). When Hawaii became an independent state in 1959, BYU-H continued to be called BYU-Hawaii; however the university subsequently changed its name to Brigham Young University–Taylorsville (BYU-TV). Today most students attend undergraduate or graduate levels at BYU-TV while some maintain dual enrollment with other universities. It has been reported that since 1985 over 50% of all new graduates have landed jobs after leaving BYU TV!

Hales wrote about his journey from Missouri to Carbon County via the Great Salt Lake. In 1857, John Sitton settled in what is now Taylorsville and started a sawmill which became one of the largest in Utah. The town received its name from James Tayloe who founded Carbon County in 1847 and also came up with the original idea for Great Salt Lake City.
Taylorsville was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young and his followers as a community of Mormon pioneers. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s, becoming an important center for agriculture and trade. In 1857, Taylorsville became the temporary capital of Utah after Salt Lake City was destroyed by a fire. After leaders from both Utah and Nevada agreed to establish a new capital in Reno, Nevada, Taylorsville was abandoned in 1861.
