Taylorsville was founded in 1847 by James Tayloe and his wife, Catharine. The town was named after General James Tayloe, who had helped lead the Utah Territory into statehood in 1850. The early residents of Taylorsville were farmers and miners who worked the Gila River Valley. In 1865, the Territorial Legislature changed the name of the valley to Utah County, which served as its own government until 1907. In 1896, the county was renamed to Taylorsville County again and became part of the City of Salt Lake City.
