Syracuse, Utah is a city in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. Syracuse is adjacent to Cedar City and Provo. The first settlers in Syracuse were Mormon pioneers who came from Illinois in 1847. In 1868, they founded a small town on the eastern edge of what is now Kane County called Maple Grove after maple trees that grew near their farmstead. In 1872, they moved their settlement to its present location on the east side of Cedar Mesa Creek just south of Syracuse's current limits. They named it Syracuse because of its similarity to contemporary Syracuse, Indiana (then Pulaski County). In 1886-87 when Brigham Young University was established in Ogden Valley by LDS missionaries under direction of President David O. McKay, many students and faculty journeyed by stagecoach to Ogden Valley for classes; thus Maple Grove became known as "the Alma Mater". When SU opened its doors for undergraduate business administration degree programs in 1951–52 following an donation from James Ewing Sr., it became known as "the New School." SU's graduate school began operations in 1954 with Drs.-Edwin Foos and Robert Witte LCSW also founding chairs upon opening day. Today SU offers over 120 degrees and certificates through several schools including: Arts & Sciences; Business Administration/Managerial Science/Business Administration Specialist; Educational Psychology; Health Education/Medical Laboratory Technician; Law Enforcement Officers Training Institute (LEO); Veterinary Medicine/Veterinarian Assistant Programs; Women’s Studies and Health Sciences programs through its six constituent faculties: College of Liberal Arts & Sciences(CLAS), College of Veterinary Medicine (CVET), Graduate School of Nursing & Midwifery (GSDM), School of Architecture + Planning(SPA), School of Food Science + Technology(STA) – making it oneof the largest universities with doctoral degrees among Uintah-Utah communities

Syracuse, Utah is a small town located in Wasatch County, Utah. The population was 1,593 at the 2000 census. Syracuse has been inhabited by humans for over six thousand years and is considered to be one of the oldest towns in Utah. The first settlers in Syracuse were members of the LDS Church who arrived in 1847. They built a log cabin on the east bank of the Sevier River. In 1850, Brigham Young appointed George Atherton as mayor of Syracuse and helped found the Syracuse School District. In 1860, Cyrus Sitton purchased land adjacent to modern-day Syracuse from Asahel Woodruff for $5 per acre. He developed this land into what is now known as Syracuse Township. In 1872, Jeptha Gunnarson immigrated toUtah with his family and founded Gunnarson City near present day Cedar City. After arriving in Utah he built two stores and began trading goods with Indians along the riverbanks near present day Cedar City and Provo. Because of this trade, Gunnarson became well-known throughout Cache Valley and was able to purchase much property around present day Syracuse. The first post office in Syracuse was established on October 8, 1875; it was called Harmonyville because all mail passed through Harmony Creek which bisected their town center at that time. On November 12, 1907, an act authorizing creation of Wasatch County was repealed due to lack of support from residents within that county limits; however, community petitioners successfully gathered signatures sufficient for creation on November 20th following a special election held pursuant thereto . The new county boundaries were adopted effective January 1st 1908 when both Sevier County (north) and Cache Valley (south) were created (). In 1915-16 there was an effort by some local citizens to change the name of their town from "Harmonyville" back to "Syracuse". However,, after much discussion no action resulted until May 15th 1916 when Clyde Hales voted against changing its name citing his belief that it should remain unchanged since it had once been designated as such by Brigham Young during his visits there back in early days After considerable public outcry & failed efforts by several different organizations including submitters to a referendum organized by Mtn View Hotel & Casino owner Wm Gifford resultant in $1,500 being raised (& divided among numerous organizations), Town Council finally changed its name upon unanimous vote on July 10th 1917 becoming "Syracuse"

Syracuse prospered during the early days of the 20th century, thanks in part to its location on the Wasatch Front, which made it an easy commute to resources such as coal and silver. However, after World War I destroyed much of Europe, economic growth slowed in Syracuse. This led to social unrest and several street gangs emerged in the 1920s. In addition, construction of Interstate 80 caused traffic congestion that hurt the economy even more. Finally, rivalries between different organized crime groups led to increased violence and crime in Syracuse. This environment contributed significantly to the city's decline by the late 1960s. By this time, few people remained in Syracuse due to poverty or loss of opportunity; instead, many residents moved away for better opportunities elsewhere.
