St. George is a town in Utah, United States. The population was 8,614 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County and part of the Salt Lake City Metropolitan Area. The founded by George Washington in 1770 as a small Mormon settlement overLooked eastward across the Great Salt Lake to what was then unknown territory, Idaho Territory (now eastern Oregon). The first white man to sight the land now known as Utah on July 24, 187 named it for General George Washington since he had been an early promoter of westward expansion in America. In his diary entry for that day, Washington noted "the beauty of this country" and called for settlers to come and explore what he believed would be a vast new land full of mineral wealth. In 1882, soon after St. George's incorporation as a town, Brigham Young issued orders authorizing polygamy which angered many Mormons in Utah who felt their religious beliefs should not be superceded by secular considerations such as polygamy which they considered immoral. This led to an outbreak of violence and boycotts by some LDS citizens against St.George merchants who continued selling goods from outside Utah despite these prohibitions. By 1890 when Congress passed the Morrill Act recognizing polygamist churches throughout America with equal rights under federal law, many Mormon leaders realized that continuing polygamy would only lead to more legal and political persecution if they chose to break with Brigham Young's doctrine outright; instead they quietly abandoned polygamy while maintaining their private members' group practice which continued until 1978 when it was finally criminalized nationwide under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 retroactive to 1960s standards). Accordingly, today there are nearly 500 Latter-day Saints living permanently in St.Georgetown – including many high-ranking church officials – compared with just 20 or so years ago when most residents were transient Mormones coming here intermittently during various missionary periods or attending seminary nearby; much has changed since then within Mormonism itself (including changes both inside and outside the priesthood) but little has stayed constant especially among its largest cultural icons: its mayors (4), city councilors (6), university presidents (2), temple president(s), bishops (1), stake presidents (4) & patriarchs/angels (5) all held office continuously from 1975 until 2012 - more than any other UTA community!
