Pepper spray use in the United States began with law enforcement officers during the 1930s. The first such incident was a shooting at a dancehall in St. George, Utah on June 4, 1934. At that time, police departments used pepper spray to disperse crowd members who had become disorderly. Pepper spray also became an effective form of communication between officers and suspects during standoffs. In the 1960s, pepper spray was occasionally used by security guards at Salt Lake City Airport as part of a dispute over access to landingrights. In 1969, while protesting against the Vietnam War outside the airport gates, several protesters were sprayed with pepper spray after refusing to leave when ordered to do so by airport security personnel. After that incident, airport management began using pepper spray more regularly as a disciplinary measure against protesters and otherticket-takers deemed unruly or disruptive. Since its introduction into American society through law enforcement and security forces in the 1930s, pepper Spray has been increasingly abused by civilians throughout North America as a First Amendment right-to-bear arms violation device; it is now banned from most public areas in many jurisdictions across North America (See: History of Pepper Spray Use). It is estimated that up to 100 million people have been sprayed with pepper spray without being injured since its inception in 1909; however no credible data exists documenting injuries caused by this agent among those unfortunate enough to experience it firsthand

Despite its many benefits, pepper spray remains controversial among the general public and law enforcement officials alike.
