Saint George, Utah is a city in southern Utah that was founded in 1847 by Mormon pioneers. The city has a population of over 100,000 people and is the seat of Logan County. It is located about 25 miles south of the city ofSalt Lake City on Interstate 15. St. George was named for Saint George, patron saint of soldiers and fortifications. In 1847, Mormons who had followed Brigham Young from Nauvoo, Illinois were suffering from persecution in Great Britain. They decided to migrate to Utah Territory and establish a new Mormon colony there. The first group to arrive in what is now St. George included sixty men, women, and children under the leadership of Captain James Fenton Keyes. The settlers began building a small town on the banks of the Little Colorado River at what is now King's Valley Drive and Weber Road (later renamed Utopia Boulevard). The town quickly became known as "The Pioneer Village." In 1850, members of the LDS church organized an agricultural society which grew corn, wheat, cottonseed oil, butterfat candles and other products from scratch while still underdeveloped. In 1854-5 Saints George erected two churches: one near present-day Main Street (known as First Congregational) and one near today's Old Mill Road (known as Second Congregational). These churches remain standing today - both are considered national historic landmarks. In 1861-2 another church was erected at what is now called Cottonwood Lane; this building remains standing today as part of Green Valley Memorial Park adjacent to Safeway grocery store complex on State Route 677 eastbound between I-15 exit 139A & exit 140A Southgate Mall Shopping Center off US Highway 89 Northgate Parkway off I-215 entrance ramp

In 1856, Brigham Young ordered the construction of a temple in St. George and it became one of the most important LDS temples in Utah because it was dedicated to God and served as an infrastructure for Mormon religion throughout much of northern Mexico and Central America. In 1893, during one of Joseph Smith's final visits to Utah, he announced that he would move his headquarters from Nauvoo, Illinois to Salt Lake City so that all Mormons could live together under one roof. On April 6, 1894, Joseph Smith moved his headquarters from Nauvoo to Salt Lake City so that all Mormons could live together under one roof! Today, St.George is home to over 150K residents who share a rich diversity in culture and religion including Mormonism (the largest denomination among Mormons), Hinduism (the second largest denomination), Buddhism (the third largest denomination), Islam (the fourthlargest denomination), Judaism (the fifthlargest denominations), Protestant Christianity (including Methodists and Baptists) and dozens more minor denominations! The city has experienced many significant moments in its history including: - In 1902 when President William Howard Taft visited Salt Lake City for four days during his annual trip through Utah; - When President Franklin D. Roosevelt made his first visit to Utah on December 3rd 1940; - On July 24th 1950 when footage were aired on television stations across America showing Elder Neil Atherton speaking at BYU about how polygamy had been practiced within the LDS Church for over 50 years; - On November 17th 1978 when an Earthquake struck southern California causing extensive damage; - On October 28th 1988 when Elder Bruce Ricks spoke at Brigham Young University aboutpolygamy being a “dirty secret” within Mormonism which had been hidden from members for decades
St. George was founded in 1847 as a Mormon outpost on the Great Salt Lake. The town grew quickly, and by 1875 it had over 10,000 residents. In 1904, St. George became the capital of Utah Territory and remained that way until 1912 when it was renamed Provo. In 1968, Provo became the capital of Utah again and remains that way today.
