The first gun target in St. George, Utah was a blacksmith shop on Beech Road. The shop was built in 1875 and destroyed by a fire in 1902.

George was born in 356 AD in what is now Turkey. He was a general and captain of an army that fought against the Persians in 331 BC. After this event, he renounced worldly possessions and devoted himself to God. He went on to preach Christianity to the people of Persia. When Jesus came into the world, George followed him and preached to them too. In 327 AD, King Heraclius of Armenia sent an army led by Antiochus III Epiphanes to conquer Syria and Palestine. When they arrived at Mount Gilead, they found a large force of Jews waiting for them there - about 60,000 men- women and children! The king ordered his troops to wipe out all these people but George refused to let them die! He rallied his troops behind him and marched onto Mount Gilead with his sword drawn ready to fight! But when he saw how many Christians were being killed by Antiochus' troops, he ran away back home before anyone could kill him too! After this incident, George became associated with Jesus Christ and started preaching throughout Syria and Palestine calling on people to believe in Him rather than doing what their king had done! In 327 AD, he founded a church called Bethlehem based on His teachings (Jude 3:23). This church soon became very successful because it appealed not just to Jews but also Gentiles who were being oppressed by Antiochus' empire! And so began one of Christianity's most important periods - the first century! During this time period apostle Paul was traveling through Israel preaching repentance (Acts 20:24-28) while also suffering persecution at Antioch (2 Timothy 3:15). eventually reaching Damascus where he was arrested (1 Corinthians 15:3-5). After three days of fasting under torture he died (Romans 16:20). At this point Peter came down from Jerusalem with James & John who carried up his body into heaven according to Acts 10:38-41)! And so we have two NT apostles martyred within three days...a really incredible story!

St. George, Utah is a small town in southwestern Utah and the seat of Duchesne County. The town was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847 as a station on the Great Salt Lake Trail. It was renamed after George Washington in 1875. The population of St. George was 1037 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest municipality in Duchesne County. The first European settler in what is now Duchesne County was José Gomez, who arrived on July 12, 1847, from Santa Fe, New Mexico. First he built a cabin near present-day Glendale and named it Rancho San Esteban de la Mesa for his ranching holdings along La Mesa Creek that lay east of Duchesne Valley south of Payson. A second Mexican settler called José Navarro arrived about October 1, 1847 and erected a log cabin on what is now US Highway 6 just north of present-day Stinson Beach northwest of Duchesne City limits. He named this place San Francisco del Norte y Bravo (Spanish for "Stronghold Hill and High Peak"). George Washington heard about these early pioneers from Brigham Young while traveling through southern Utah during his mission to preach the gospel to Native Americans in 1848-49 and journeyed overland to reach them near where they were settled less than one year later on September 25,1849 at Granite Mountain East Fork La Salle River some fourteen miles northeast of downtown St. George when he reached Mount Carmel southeast of today's Kaabon Damsite Boulevard NW corner Main Street behind today's Community & Technical College Building lot Lot 6 North between Third Avenue NE corner Fourth Avenue NE cross Streets Wagon Wheel Road). He preached there for two weeks before returning home via stagecoach from Independence Rock located 2½ miles southwest at present-day Cedar Hills outside Provo (now Davis) City Limits having left Nauvoo Missouri on February 27th following his long journey across America reaching Douglasdale Arizona April 21st after spending seven days bivouacked among the Timpanogos Indians southwesterly bound at Red Butte Pass within reported range of Spanish explorers Humboldt Promontory Point southeast corner Springerville Ariz., their Mapuche allies Atacama Desert lying immediately due west beyond said Promontory point 400 miles due east according to Spanish explorer Ventura De Anza’s mapmaker’s effort including all future California territory comprising much or most eastern Oregon Territory then being part only vaguely geographicallyof Mexico which comprehended all or nearly all both Interior Territories composing modern day Colorado Territory plus northwestern Oklahoma Territory adjoining Texas) arriving safe enough Uptown Salt Lake City March 14th Missouri Pacific Mail Company express wagon train special deliverance under command Major John Cushing Captain James Price Mayflower Stage Coach Depot June 8thCheyenne Wells January 9th).
