Saint George is a city in the southern Utah Valley, located on the border of Arizona and Nevada. As of the 2010 census, Saint George had a population of 508. The name "George" is derived from George Washington, who was born in nearby Clearwater County and spent his childhood here. The first European to visit what is now Saint George was Spanish Father Francisco de Paula y Costilla in 1769. Captain James Cook visited the area in 1779 and named it San Pedro de Allende after General Antonio José de Allende, commander of fort San Miguel at the mouth of the Colorado River. In 1847 Mormon pioneers arrived seeking religious freedom and founded Salt Lake City here; they took up residence in tents on Temple Square (now Independence Hall) until they erected their first brick house on State Street in 1849. When Brigham Young organized the LDS Church in 1847 he assigned Saints to build an outpost at this site called Logan Creek Station (later SaintGeorge). The following year Saints built a log cabin near present-day Cedar City for president Brigham Young and his family; he often used it as their home. They continued to use it until November 26, 1850 when Young ordered them to move westward into California because he saw that Mormonism would only succeed if practiced by people who could actually reach Zion—a term then meaning Jerusalem. In 1863 Governor John Cranch selected this site as one among several locations chosen for what became known as Utah Valley University; construction began there two years later and soonriseuptoan institutionof higher learning with such renowned faculty as Alfred Russel Wallace and Lewis Mumford. George, Utah is a small town in Ogden County, Utah. The population was 1,976 at the 2010 census. George was founded by pioneers in 1847 as Cedar Point on the Snake River. The community later moved to its present site and became a ghost town after a fire destroyed most of the buildings in 1901. After World War II, the community experienced increased growth due to nearby uranium mines and ensuing development in the area. In 1984, George merged with neighboring Cedar City to form one municipality. As of the 2010 census, George had an estimated population of 2,083. George began its history as Cedar Point on the Snake River which was founded by pioneers during 1847 when they were looking for a new home for their families after moving from Independence Township, Missouri (now St Joseph). The first settlers were horsemen who named their ranch "Cedar Point" after their original location on the Snake River where they could see much land but no water because it was too far away from any rivers or lakes that would provide them with water supply. When Cedar Point received word that gold had been found near what is now Denver Colorado Springs and Black Forest Arizona Territory, many of these pioneer farmers decided to move there since they could get rich quickly selling gold nuggets out of their rocks while others built homes and businesses around Cedar Point until it slowly declined over time because no other settlement sprung up nearby to offer competition or support developments like this one did so those people who originally started out at Cedar Point decided not to follow through with developing there land themselves but rather left it alone and let others take advantage of them without them having anything back from it all! This happened even though some people did eventually develop there land including John Denton who founded Denton Oil Company which manufactured automobiles here before moving his company acrossstate into North Dakota! It wasn't until 1954 that George finally got its own city status when it merged with neighboring Cedar City which at then had just under 1,000 residents! Today's citizens of George are proud members of both their hometowns; however even more proud are they of what they have accomplished together- two cities that banded together during difficult times (1984 merger & 2004) and gave back to their respective communities in ways large & small alike including donations towards local charities such as First United Methodist Church & Golden Triangle Park - two wonderful parks located just outside each city limits that serve as great community gathering places for locals & visitors alike!
St. George was founded by Mormons in 1847 as a Mormon town on the banks of the Green River. The name came from St. George, the patron saint of Scotland, who is also known for his victory over the dragon in a Christian legend. The town grew rapidly, and by 1850 it had a population of around 1,500 people. In 1857, Brigham Young announced that Saint George would be the site of an LDS temple and preside over all Latter-day Saints living thereabouts. When construction began on the temple in 1859, St. George's residents were among the first to receive news of the event. By 1870, however, most residents had emigrated to Utah or elsewhere within Mormonism.
