Gun parts history in St. George, Utah can be traced back to the early 1800s when pioneer farmers and ranchers in the area began to purchase guns and ammunition for their herds of livestock. The first gunsmith in St. George was William Devereux, who located his business on Second Street in 1836. By 1850, there were at least 10gunsmiths operating in the town. In 1876, John J. Cooke opened a store on First Avenue that served as a nucleus for many later businesses including Gun Range & Ammunition Store (1911-1975), Armoury (1976-1981), and finally Gadsden Sporting Goods (1982-present). Most of the early firearms used by settlers were muzzleloaders or shotguns which required loading several rounds into the barrel before being fired. This process was tedious and time consuming, so most pioneers instead opted to purchase rifles or handguns from local arms dealers. The first rifle made in St. George was an English pattern Model 1855 rifle purchased from Hennepin Arms Company in 1866. It is still extant today and is currently housed at Southern Utah University’s Rifle Museum

In 1847 Brigham Young ordered all Mormon males between the ages of 25 and 55 to leave Nauvoo and move eastward into what would become Utah Territory under his leadership. Many families did so, including those of Joseph Smith who had moved from Palmyra and Clearfield Township in New Yorkstate two years earlier. It was here that Smith first met Jesus Christ when He appeared unto him on Christmas morning 1829 while he was traveling through Anthon House near Mount Carmel outside of Independence Missouri. This event is canonized as one of Mormonism’s most significant moments within the faith. St. George, Utah is a small town located in Wasatch County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Salt Lake" originated from the naming of this region during the early 19th century when it was called by Mormon missionaries for the city of Leningrad on Russia's east coast. In 1847 Brigham Young and his followers founded Salt Lake City on an tract of land north of present-day St. George; they named their new settlement after GeneralGeorge Washington so that America's first president would be associated with their new capital. The townsite around what is now St. George was first settled in 1847 by Mormons led by Brigham Young as a place to provide them with food and shelter while they built Zion Valley west of modern Provo. When that valley became too isolated and barren for farming, members of Young's group relocated to what is now St. George in 1850; today's downtown area was developed primarily during World War II as a housing camp for Japanese American soldiers interned in Utah during the war (see also Provo). In 1862 Brigham Young appointed John C Lee as mayor of St George after he vacated office as Mayor of Nauvoo due to illness; Lee served until 1865 when he resigned because he desired more autonomy within LDS Church governance than had been given him under Brigham Young's leadership at Nauvoo (see also History timeline: Latter-day Saint movement). As a result, St George enjoyed some stability through its early years despite constant turmoil within Mormonism caused by internal power struggles between different factions within Mormonism - see also Early history: Origins and growth of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints). In 1875 President Millard Fillmore issued Executive Order No 3 which called for all citizens over eighteen years old to wear badges identifying them as members or visitorsOfThe Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) rather than individuals thereof since such identification would allow military service without financial compensation; this order created much excitement and confusion among Mormons who did not realize that it applied only to those living inside LDS territorial boundaries - see also Society:Early life & structureoftheChurchOfJesusChristOfLatterDaySaints). By 1886 most residents in StGeorge had either left or were converts to other denominations brought over by Mormon missionaries including Frederick Kappler who arrived from Germany in 1886 hoping to found a Lutheran church near Great Western Railway Station southward into southern Utah - see also Religious diversity: ProtestantsandMormonsinUtah). As late as 1907 there remained about ninety three Mormons living in downtownStGeorge although most had departed during the previous decade due to social unrest caused by polygamy (see also Social unrest: PolygamyinUtahduring1907-1920)). During World War I many men serving in The U S Army served alongside local women who cooked troops' rations at various army posts throughout western USA - see also Food wartime rationing: WomeninvolvedatvariousarmypostsinwesternUSA). By 1919 there were only about five Mormons remaining DowntownSGerald Burton Compton wrote about these days:"It seems almost impossible now...to imagine that any time ago everything here [Downtown SGerald Burton Compton] looked like a picturesque little garden watered by fairy tales."

In 1847, St. George was the capital of Utah Territory. The town's growth was due to its strategic location on the Wasatch Front as a staging ground for Union and Mormon soldiers fighting in the Mexican-American War. The city's first store opened in 1851. By 1860, St. George had over 10,000 residents and prospered thanks to its cotton crop and trade with nearby Ogden and Provo. In 1865, when Utah became a state, St. George became the state's second largest city after Salt Lake City. During World War II, St. George served as an airfield for the United States Army Air Forces during the Battle of Las Vegas Valley in 1942-1943. Afterward, it resumed its role as an industrial center with production of military vehicles such as tanks and planes beginning in 1945. In 1967, following years of growth brought about by new development such as light industrial businesses and housing developments that straddled both sides of State Street (now North First Avenue),StGerald merged with adjacent cities Provo and Ogden into one city under one government structure known as "Utah City". Today much of what used to be downtown StGeorge is now part of either Provo or Ogden neighborhoods which have made it difficult to determine where things began or ended within that area once called "StGeorge".
