St. George is a city in Utah, United States. The population was 27,539 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Grand County and part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, St. George had a population of 64,484. The town was founded by Brigham Young in 1847 as Bridger Station on the Great Salt Lake. In 1857, it became St. George when it incorporated as a town under the name of that year's national capital, Washington Territory (later Utah Territory). The first post office opened in St.George on July 1, 1857; however, there were no residents living in town until February 6th 1860 when three men arrived from Illinois to build Fort Bridger on what is now known as Main Street and laid out streets through what is now downtown St.George

The original settlers in St.George were Mormon refugees from Missouri who had followed Brigham Young to Utah in 1847. After the landing on the Salt Lake Valley, many people came to live in what is now St. George because it was a new land with no water or other resources available nearby. There were also rumors that this would be the next great Mormon settlement after they had conquered California and built their own city thereon (see Bountiful). The first church building in StGeorge was erected on July 24th, 1850 by Hyrum Smith and Solomon Mackay under direction of Brigham Young himself. It served as a meeting house until 1875 when another church building was erected which still stands today as the oldest structure within the boundaries of present-day StGeorge County’s municipal limits (see photo below). During its early years, much effort went into developing agriculture and stockraising during those difficult pioneer days before roads were created and railways reached much further inland than they do now; however these endeavors are all long ago forgotten within the colorful history of this small community located on one of Great Britain’s most important crossroads outside London proper! In 1907 only 10% of residents lived outside census-designated areas while over 60% lived within 1 mile of their homes! Today very few people live more than 5 miles from their homes! This is largely due to Interstate 80 cutting through central StGeorge like a knife slicing through butter; traffic congestion becoming an ever-present problem for everyone living hereabouts! However despite all these challenges life remains quite comfortable for those who choose to stay – notwithstanding occasional spikes in crime rates which have tended to occur around major holiday events such as Christmas & Easter – let us hope that someday another generation will come along and bring renewed energy & hope to this once beautiful but slowly dying community!

In 1916, St. George became part of the independent City of Deseret after being split from Salt Lake City.
