The first gun protection measure taken in Springville was a fence around the settlement, which was completed in 1848. This fence consisted of a series of posts extending along a long straight line, each post having two circles cut out of it. These circles represented cannons that could be used to defend the settlement from Indians or other attackers. In 1850, a store and guns were opened in Springville and soon thereafter, firearms began being purchased and used for protection purposes within the town. A shooting range was also established in this time period and became one ofSpringville's most popular tourist attractions. In 1868, a schoolhouse and gun safe were constructed within the existing courthouse building. One such Businessman who helped set up shop here was Jerald Richards who built Richards Oil Refinery which still stands today at 5 Main Street in Springville. Richards began his career working as a clerk at local stores before opening his own store in 1868 which became one of Utah's most successful businesses; he eventually retired from business ownership but continue to be remembered fondly by many residents hereabouts as "the father of Springville." During World War II springvale served as Headquarters for 3rd Battalion (Utah) Infantry Regiment 902d Regimental Combat Team (3/9), known commonly as "The Golden Lions" because they received their nickname during combat operations against Japanese forces near Tokyo Bay on April 6th 1945 while engaged in Operation Bodyguard which successfully halted Japan's planned assault upon Pearl Harbor; this event is also celebrated annually by locals as Veterans Day!
