Sprague opened the first gunsmith business in Springville on Main Street in 1892. His business was successful and he moved to a larger building on North First Street in 1898. He continued to operate his store until his death in 1918. His son, Orson G., took over the business from him and operated it for 51 years until his death in 1951. In 1968, Burt Smith became the owner of the SPRINGVILLE GUNSMITH SHOP from John A Sprague's widow Esther (nee Cook). He continued to own and operate the store until it closed its doors in 1984 after 63 years of operation!

Springville is part of the Provo–Orem, UT Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Springville were Mormon refugees who had escaped persecution in Nauvoo, Illinois. The town was laid out by James W. Day and others on April 15, 1867, as a station on the Great Western Railroad. In 1870 the railroad was extended to Provo and Springville became one of Provo's original townships; it remained so until 1959 when it became an incorporated municipality within Uintah County. The community has experienced growth since its incorporation; its current population is 1,362. Springville is bordered by Cottonwood Heights to the north and east, Pleasant Grove to the south and west, Draper to the northwest (the town's only street), Logan to the northwest (the county seat) and Spanish Fork to the southeast (the primary ZIP code). In addition to its commercial center—containing several independently owned businesses—Springville offers two main cultural attractions: Brigham Young University-Hawaii Campus & Museum (opened in 2006) adjacent to Main Street and Pioneer Village adjacent to Taylor Middle School across from Park Elementary School (both opened in 2002).
