Spanish Fork, UT is a city in Carbon County, Utah, United States. The population was 7,851 at the 2010 census. Spanish Fork is part of the Provo–Orem metropolitan area. The city began as a small settlement called Spanish Fort on February 14, 1847 by trappers and fur traders working for the Mormon Battalion under Brigham Young. The fort was destroyed in an attack by Paiute Indians in 1849 and replaced by Spanish Fork Station on the Provo River. A post office called Spanish Fork was established at Spanish Fork on October 15, 1850, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. Spanish Fork grew rapidly after railroad construction commenced through Carbon County in the early 1860s. By 1870, it had become a major town with over 10 businesses and 100 residents. In 1875, six miles (10 kilometers) of Indian Railway were completed from Spanish Fort to Spanishfork; this helped to develop the town into a significant commercial center and support service activities such as schools and hospitals. During World War I (1914-18), French Mine Wars took place adjacent to the town; these raids caused extensive damage to German mines near Mexican Springs but did not impact English coal mining operations hereabouts. However, during World War II (1939-1945), intense bombing raids conducted by USAAF bombers inflicted serious damage on downtownSpanish fork – most notably when one bomb exploded near First Baptist Church killing nine people; this event is still commemorated annually with a community day/fest known as "Bomber Day" in honor of those killed or injured during that conflict. In 1951-1952, following passage of Idaho statehood legislation – which occurred two years before SpaniFort's incorporation into Carbon County –the city became home to elected officials for both Carbondale (nearby) and Provo City limits; this arrangement continued until 1959 when Carbondale obtained official status as its own municipality separate from SpaniFort.. After lengthy deliberations among various communities within Carbondale boundaries over how best to handle cross-border transportation issues associated with newly acquired county services such as school busesing etc., Spanish Fort finally annexed its neighbor's services on December 5th,, 1961 effective immediately; however no annexation ceremonies occurred that year due to language barriers between both communities resulting from cultural differences regarding frontier life - typical aspects of early 20th century frontier culture which persist even today among some veteran Mexican Americans living herein today.. The town was originally called Fillmore because of its location at the fill of the River Colorado. In 1870, Spanish Fork became the capital of Kane County and it has remained that way since then. Spanish Fork is a largely agricultural town with a few light industrial businesses. It is home to the University of Utah School of Medicine and other educational institutions. The population of Spanish Fork was 8,471 as of 2010. Spanish Fork’s history can be traced back to when Mormon pioneers arrived in Kane County in 1847. They were organized into two groups: the Stovall Party led by Brigham Young and John Davenport’s party led by James Mantle. The Stovall Party had been sent out from Nauvoo, Illinois to explore new territory after learning about it from their prophet Joseph Smith. On July 24th, they reached Spanish Fork Lake while traveling on horseback and camped there for several days before continuing their journey northward on foot or wagons until they reached Cottonwood Creek on August 1st. From Cottonwood Creek they continued onward upriver until they reached Massacre Valley on August 10th whereupon they stopped for dinner with local Indian chiefs who presented them with presents including horses, cattle, firearms and blankets (Bishop Cannon Diary). After dinner they continued on their journey passed through Slaughter Valley again before reaching Boot Hill just south of present day Portuguese Corrales Cemetery on August 14th (Hicks Journal). The Mormon pioneers first landed here in what is now rural Kane County but soon discovered an area that would prove increasingly useful for growing crops: Atascosa Lake which lies east of today’s Mexican border near present-day Fillmore City (Cannon Diary). The Mormons began building log cabins here in search of more secure land where they could establish their Colony – one thousand six hundred acres were purchased from Juan Manuel Pacheco and Don Francisco Alvarado respectively on October 15th (Diary Entry #8). Over time these settlements grew larger as more Mormons arrived including many converts from Missouri who had fled LDS persecution there following Church founder Joseph Smith's martyrdom at Carthage Jail (Fowler History File #2; “Mormon Pioneers Come To Spanish Fork” [Salt Lake City], Deseret News [November 25 1893]).
