The community was founded in 1869 by Mormon pioneers who left Nauvoo, Illinois for the Salt Lake Valley. Spanish Fork is named after Manuel Arguelles de Santa Anna y Costilla, lieutenant general and commander of Mexican forces that fought against American settlers in what is now Arizona and New Mexico during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). At first, Spaniard Fork resided within what are now Spanishfork Township and part of Native Village. In 1868 an agreement was made between Brigham Young and José Antonio Echeverría to split these settlements into two townships: Spanish Fork would be the eastern township while Native Village would be the western township. The town was platted in 1870 with James Waddell as its first mayor. The cornerstone for the first courthouse was laid on December 20th of that year by LDS bishop Heber Jenson. By 1875 there were over 100 citizens living in Spanish Fork with a total population of 3200 people when it became a city under new state law which permitted cities to be formed without voter approval or consent from their residents
