In 1912, a post office was established at Spanish fork with Elisha Hammons as first secretary. That same year saw also one of Uintah County's first oil leases when ranchers Hyrum Sitton and Charles Waddell leased 640 acres (248 hectares) near present-day Aspen Grove Cemetery for $2 per acre (100 m²). This allowed cattle ranching operations to thrive through much of pre-1928 Utah history while also providing some necessary transportation links betweenWasatch Valley and the Lower Great Salt Lake Valley needed for crop production east of Provo
