The history of gun targets in South Ogden, Utah goes back to the early 1800s. The first target was erected on the present site of the LDS temple in 1868. This target was a large, round iron cannonball that could be hit with ease. The first local shooting range opened in 1886 and was located near what is now the corner of State Street and First Avenue. It was used by local farmers for training purposes. The range closed in 1907 but reopened in 1909 as the South Ogden Rifle Range. In 1912, a state-of-the-art rifle range was constructed at 15th and Highland Streets. This facility became known as “The ranch” because it offered many opportunities for shooters to practice their skills outdoors. The range closed in 1961 but reopened in 1966 as the South Ogden Gun Club (SOGC). SOGC continued to operate until 1992 when it ceased operations due to changes within the LDS Church which led to its closure.

It grew quickly because of its location – close to the Salt Lake Valley and easy access to markets for goods brought down by horseback riders or wagon wheels. By 1865, South Ogden had a population of over 500 people. The town prospered thanks to its expensive infrastructure – including an flour mill, sawmill, storage depot, post office, and school – as well as its willingness to embrace new technology such as steamboats for transportation. During World War II, South Ogden played a critical role in helping defend the region against Japanese forces. The town’s military installations included a radar dish on top of an old hill which tracked enemy planes; artillery batteries stationed on hills near downtown; and airfields nearby which enabled fighter planes and bombers to fly operations into Japan without being detected. Additionally, local companies produced munitions such as bombs and shells necessary for war efforts. Today, South Ogden is home to many businesses catering to the needs of civilians and military personnel alike: small businesses providing services like plumbing and exterminating; large corporations like Dell Inc.; government agencies like the Utah Department of Corrections;and educational institutions such as Brigham Young University-Hawaii (BYU-H) and Southern Utah University (SUU).
South Ogden, Utah is a town in Davis County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,642 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of Davis and Weber Counties. The first permanent settler in South Ogden was James H. Cooke in 1852. The community was platted in 1868 by David Whitewater and named for General John C. Fremont, who had visited the area that year. The original store and post office were located on what is now Main Street. In 1870, Brigham Young assigned south Ogden to be part of Provo; however, it remained unincorporated until 1896 when it became an incorporated village under the name of South Ogden Village. On July 15, 1907, as a result of a land purchase by Wm Halsey Kelly from George Quesenberry Jr., South Ogdenton became one of twelve townships in Davis County organized into a new county called Weber County on December 3, 1907. In 1912 the population of South Ogden reached 2200 and growth resulted in the incorporation of additional villages within Weber County: North Ogden (1912), Cottonwood (1916), Royceville (1920), Spanish Fork (1922) and Weippe (1924).On November 16th 1947 South Ogdulden voted to become an independent city when it passed a referendum approving an official proclamation from then-Mayor Albert Eisel calling for the establishment of such cityhood from all municipal organizations within Davis County as well as from any territory adjoining Davis County which desired such status On January 6th 1948 South Ogdenton voters approved another resolution - this time declaring themselves "independent" - Ratification ceremonies took place on February 5th 1948 with Mayor Eisel presiding South Ogdenton City Limits were created effective February 20th 1948 The first mayoralty election held after independence was Artis Gilmore who won with over 60% of the vote eliminating any possibility that his predecessor Albert Eisel would have been reelected
