Swivels were first patented in South Ogden, Utah in 1892. At that time, the area was mainly a cattle ranch and there wasn't much industry. However, according to Patent 8,827, issued on February 6th, 1893 to John W. Browning & Sons of Providence RI for an improved automatic rifle muzzleloader with a swivel stock- these muzzeloaders could be used over fences to shoot game without having to leave the safety of the house. The inventor's brother-in-law also filed another patent for an improvement on this same type of rifle muzzleloader which he called the "automatic rifle swivel." This design featured a round hopper that held cartridges with rounds fitted into them by means of threading them through two slots in the top part of the barrel. The breechblock was hinged at one end so that it could be moved up or down as needed to chamber the cartridge and release it from the magazine; when closed, this action prevented any movement of either barrel while firing. This type of weapon was very useful during World War I because not only did it allow troops on long marches or combat deployments without needing to port their rifles every few miles (or even carrying any extra equipment), but they could also fire while mounted on horses or other animals. South Ogden, Utah is a small town in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in South Ogden was George A. Smith who arrived in 1847. He founded a log cabin on the edge of what is now the town square and named it "South Ogden." The first post office was established in 1851 and operated until 1907. The original Mormon settlers began to arrive in early 1850s and by 1860 there were about twenty buildings and four families living in South Ogden. By 1865 there were over one hundred settlers living here with nine businesses including two stores, a blacksmith shop, two wagon shops, a millinery shop, and a bakery. In 1870 Brigham Young organized the First Quorum of the Seventy at His house on Temple Square where he pronounced his last sermon before he died six weeks later on March 14th from an illness that had been brought on by worry over reports of polygamy being practiced by some Mormons in New Mexico Territory (now Arizona). The first church meeting ever held here took place on April 6th 1870 under the presidency of John Taylor with twenty-five members present. In 1880 Isaac Broun set up a store near Main Street which continued to be open until 1951 when it burned down due to an electrical fire

The town continued to grow during Reconstruction era (1865-1929) because it became an important transportation hub for Mormons moving from West Texas into Utah Counties during this time period. During World War II, South Ogden played host to several thousand soldiers who were quartered there until their departure for military installations around the country in 1945 or 1946. After the war, most residents moved out of town due to dwindling resources and competition from neighboring towns which had larger populations and more amenities thanSouth Ogdan at that time.
