The town is named for General David South (1789-1864), who fought in the Mexican–American War and was brevetted Brigadier General after his victory at Buena Vista Hill. The first post office in South Ogden was established on October 15, 1872. The current post office building was built in 1907 and replaced an earlier structure that was destroyed by a fire in 1904. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 613 people residing in the town. Of these, 228 (30 percent) were male and 248 (60 percent) female. The average age was 44 years; 24 percent were under the age of 18; 10 percent were between the ages of 18 and 24; and 60 percent were over 64 years old. Hispanic or Latino residents made up 3% of the population

The first European to visit South Ogden was Spanish explorer Pedro de la Hoz, who found it in 1677. However, it wasn't until 1815 when Brigham Young led a team of Mormons from Nauvoo to explore the area which would later become Utah. In 1847, South Ogden became part of Logan County when it was organized out of portions of Weber County. In 1907, Logan County was renamed Salt Lake County in honor of LDS president Joseph Smith Jr.'s wife Emma Hale Smith.
