It is bordered by Davis County to the north and east, Weber County to the south and west, and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument to the southwest. The city was named for South Jordan, a small town in Weber County. The population of South Jordan was estimated at 24,521 as of 2010. The land that makes up South Jordan was first settled by people who were moving from England in the mid 1800s. They formed communities along Cache Valley Creek and built homes on high ground near Red Rock Canyon. In 1872, Brigham Young designated part of what is now SouthJordan as a military reservation where Mormons could practice their religion unmolested. This area became known as "The Promised Land". In 1885, when Congress passed the Indian Appropriations Act, it included provisions for allotting land to Native Americans in Utah. The Mormon Bishopric soon received an order from Brigham Young to sell all tribal lands within 10 miles of Salt Lake City so that they could be used for grazing purposes only. Bishop Cannon ordered his men not to participate in this sale because he felt that it would upset Native Americans who had been living on these lands for centuries. Despite this order from bishop Cannon, some Mormons did take part in the sale process; however, most of them wound up with land near Salt Lake City instead of inside The Promised Land which they had hoped for. This situation changed when President Grover Cleveland granted General James Auchinleck a permit to build an irrigation canal through The Promised Land which would provide water resources for farming areas outside Salt Lake City. This offer changed everything because farmers now could come into contact with Native American populations which allowed them to learn about their cultures and practices without fear of retribution or violence from religious zealots like bishop Cannon who still believed that white people were corrupted by black blood and should never mix with Indians again! In 1924–25 President Herbert Hoover issued Executive Order 9984 which banned interracial marriage within any state except Nevada because it violated federal law prohibiting discrimination against citizens based on race or color! As a result many Mormons left Utah until finally becoming permanent residents in other states such as Arizona or Oregon after those laws were amended during Franklin D Roosevelt's presidency (1938). Today descendants of these original Mormon settlers can still be found throughout North America including South Jordan where there are substantial concentrations around Red Rock Canyon National Park

South Jordan is a city in Utah, United States. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of Logan County. The name "South Jordan" comes from the south side of South Jordan River which flowed through and around the town site. The first permanent settlers in what is now South Jordan came to Utah in 1847 on horseback from Illinois. They were led by Captain John Cranch and his brother-in-law, David Waddell, who had been influential Mormon missionaries in central Illinois during the 1840s. In November 1850, Brigham Young appointed Waddell governor of Utah Territory and set out for South Jordan with his family to found a new home for the Latter Day Saints people. At that time only about 50 people lived in what is now South Jordan; but within five years over 1,000 Mormons had arrived there from throughout Weber County including Cache Valley and Springdale areas east of the Wasatch Mountains. This growth has been attributed to two factors: First, LDS missionaries made an effective case for locating their religious center in easily accessible geographic surroundings; second, early settlers realized that this was an ideal location for grain farming since waterford roads reached it from southern Salt Lake City and Provo (the capital). By 1860 most residents of what is now SouthJordan were Protestant Methodists with some Catholics living nearby as well; however LDS Church services continued to be held at Fort Bridger until 1877 when Brigham Young ordered all temples except those located near Winter Quarters closed due to political unrest across America culminating with Manifesto I of 1846 challenging slavery–a measure known as anti-Mormonism developmentally speaking. In 1861 Brigham Young organized a new territorial government called Provisional Government No. 2 based on principles similar to those underlying Provisional Government No. 1 but with authority vested instead in local officials rather than Washington D.C.. The provisional government also included representatives from surrounding counties which helped grow agricultural production necessary for goods manufactured northward under Union rule during the American Civil War (1861–1865). When Confederate forces invaded Utah on April 14th 1862 they encountered little resistance from local Mormon defenders who managed to retreat without loss or damage despite numerical superiority numerically due largely to experience gained during previous wars against Mexico (1848) and Canada (1859), among other battlefield engagements On December 8th 1862 President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 9102 prohibiting any further immigration into or presence within Utah Territory pending legislation authorizing assimilation into U S society like that enacted by Congress following Oregon's wagon train massacre providing eventual proof needed for anti-Mormon discrimination laws subsequently passed.–This order effectively ended white European settlement in Utah while opening up much of western Wyoming and parts ofArizona making it one of the largest land grants ever given away at public expense outside Alaska or Nevada A few weeks later President Lincoln approved General Order 13491 calling upon all citizens "to exercise all proper vigilance against any attempt hereafter made by foreigners either male or female ...to penetrated our territory." This order became known as Order X because it applied specifically to noncitizens seeking entrance intoUtah generally who were not already residents.– Restrictions on polygamy also followed orders related thereto such as Presidential Proclamation 9560 dated January 3rd 1865 which prohibited men older than forty years old from marrying women younger than twenty years old unless both parties were properly married accordingSigned jointly by James Kintner US Attorney General 1863 – 1865 & Brigham Young himselfEquality before law was eventually established under statehood provisions following fight over Jurisdiction Act 1870 between LDS Church leadership & state legislators – parallel process involving states having no eastern boundary & neighboring lands claimed by both entities although jurisdiction lay solely within each state
