After World War II, South Jordan experienced increased growth as a result of development within its borders including becoming an agricultural center and being host to several large universities including Brigham Young University (BYU) and University of Utah (UT). Since 2000, however, social issues have become increasingly prominent in SouthJordan with increasing concern about gentrification and crime rates within the city limits
South Jordan was founded in 1847 by pioneers from Illinois. The town was named for the South Jordan River, which flows through it. The community grew quickly, and by 1870 it had a population of 350 people. By 1900, the town had reached 1,500 people and became an agricultural center. In 1933, South Jordan adopted a city charter and began to grow rapidly as a commercial center. In 1971, the city merged with nearby Ogden to form the current city of South Jordan.
