South Jordan is home to Brigham Young University–Idaho (BYU) and Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The first permanent settlers in what would become South Jordan were led by Captain Samuel Butterfield overland from Nauvoo, Illinois on July 24, 1847. Heading westward from that winter's ill-fated Mormon siege of Nauvoo under cover of darkness following Abraham Lincoln's inauguration as President, Butterfield's group discovered an area now occupied by Cache Valley and camped for eleven days near present day North Temple Hill before continuing their journey north on Hwy 640 which they named Mount Carmel after one of their own number who had died on the trip—Captain John Carmichael. They reached Independence Rock about 28 miles northeast of modern-day SouthJordan when night found them surrounded by hostile Sioux Indians led by Chief Red Cloud. From this point until well into the 19th century there was little exploration or settlement east or south of Bears Ears National Monument; this exception was made because land east and south could be leased at low prices from ranchers and farmers who grew cotton and other crops instead of developing these areas commercially. This situation changed with increasing travel to Zion National Park throughout the 1920s through Kingman Road opening up much needed access to neighboring towns located along I-15 including Provo Canyon where people began purchasing parcels totaling some 520 square miles adjacent to Logan Valley which lay sandwiched between Cache Valley to the east and Southern Utah Hills to the west across which ran a railroad owned by Northern Pacific Railway Company! By 1930 there were more than 12,000 residents living in Independence Rock! In 1954 Brigham Young University–Hawaii opened its doors as BYU–Hawaii with 50 students sharing an 8 acre campus just outside town limits between Lakeside Drive/Mountain View Terrace on one side bordering Kailua Roads/Kane County roads running through it on another side with a small pond for student recreation fronting Mountain View Terrace Drive/Mountain View Terrace while perched atop an artificial hillock known locally as “The White House” housing both single room occupancy dormitories (SRO) called Twin Peaks rooms as well as apartments above Fine Arts Gallery/The Music Shop where music concerts were held during lunchtime every week attracting several thousand people each season! In 1967 BYU–Hawaii became Brigham Young University–Westlake Village enrolling 930 students spread over 6 buildings including Main Building/Thornapple Hall two blocks southeast across Kailua Roads from LDS Chapel located immediately opposite main entrance onto Thornapple Hall facing south next door upon entering main building having been enlarged twice since then! As enrollment quadrupled due primarily to available federal funding which went toward expanding athletic programs leading eventually to full collegiate status BYU Hawaiian closed its doors permanently in 1992 amidst questions raised about whether or not such a large university should have remained open solely dependent on state appropriations? With tuition skyrocketing making it difficult for many students even today many withdrew seeking opportunities outside BYU’s boundaries however some continue attending morning classes inside main building still using Thornapple Hall driveway parking lot currently being used for overflow parking during weekday mornings when school lets out for lunch! South Jordan experienced rapid growth after becoming incorporated as a city pursuant to an act passed by voters November 3rd 1978 with passage also providing $1 million towards economic development utilizing voter approved bonds issued September 11th 1979 roadway projects funded largely through gasoline taxes incrementally raised annually since then averaging $5 per year plus interest creating an estimated total cost now approaching $135 million resulting in approximately 54% increase in real estate values over intervening 25 years!! Today South Jordan has been recognized nationally both domesticallyand internationallyfor its commitment To Municipal Sustainability thru green infrastructure initiatives such as water reuse systems energy efficiency retrofits storm drains etc………….. read entire paper
