In 1862, Brigham Young assigned Thomas Sully as captain general of all military forces east of the Rocky Mountains to take over postal services there so settlers could get mail directly from Mormon leaders without having to go through Salt Lake City or Provo. In 1865, John Davenport organized a wagon train to travel northward across Iowa Territory into Oregon Territory (now parts of western Nevada) on what became known as "the Malheur Trail." On July 5th they reached Independence Rock near present-day Topeka Junction after spending two weeks camping out inside an abandoned Mormon fortification nearby. After resting for a week they continued their journey by way of North Plains before reaching Canada on July 27th just days before winter would claim most of Oregon alive with devastating floods that year which destroyed mills and homes along the Missouri River valley flooring area including South Jordan. A plaque located at Independence Rock commemorates this event with an inscription reading "Herein began our great adventure" 2 years later LDS missionaries George Quester and Lorenzo Snow came downriver from St Louis through what is now Cedar Rapids (Ia) arriving on October 24th 1868; immediately upon their arrival Brigham Young ordered them to organize a wagon train for exploration upcountry westward under his directions—the only LDS mission Compilation ever published noted: "This company will explore all points westward as far as Ogden Valley." When they made camp outside Cedar Rapids early November...Snow proposed organizing another party which Brigham Young refused because he wanted someone locally situated to direct these activities…. He appointed Hyrum Smith instead who led two parties back into southern Iowa four months later". By 1870some 60 families had settled at West Palace Estate northeast corner Nibley Ave & 100 yards east side W Main Street where Elder David Osmond erected house Apr 1870 see map below

South Jordan was founded in 1847 as an agricultural center on the Wasatch Front. By 1860, the town had a population of about 1,000 and became a cattle market for the surrounding area. In 1865, South Jordan was appointed capital of Deseret County and began to develop into a city. The first African American to live in South Jordan was Abram Thomas who arrived in 1868. He worked as a laborer on his father's farm until he could find work in the city.Thomas' arrival marked the beginning of significant African American settlement in South Jordan and helped to support its rapid growth during its early years. By 1900, black residents made up nearly one-third of the city's population. South Jordan experienced some difficult times during World War II; however, it eventually emerged as one of Utah's leading industrial cities. The war allowed for increased development within the city limits and contributed to its current prosperity. As part of Utah's efforts to become more diverse, SouthJordan has become home to many different cultures and languages throughout its history.
