The town was founded in 1875 by Brigham Young and his men as a wagon stop on the road between Provo and Ogden. The first settlers were farmers who grew irrigated crops and raised livestock. In 1915, when South Jordan became an incorporated community, it had a population of 521. In 1950, when South Jordan annexed portions of Bearsville and Centerville to its north, the population stood at 1,534. By 1990, South Jordan's population had grown to 6,587 with a total land area of 17 square miles (46 square kilometers). Today SouthJordan is one of the fastest-growing towns in Utah with over 10% growth each year. The history of South Jordan can be traced back to 1875 when Brigham Young and his men decided to establish a wagon stop on the road between Provo and Ogden for their troops during the time that General David Hunter was campaigning against Mexico. At first there was much opposition from some residents because they did not want their town named after Brigham Young’s elderly father—who died earlier that year—but eventually enough people came together to vote to name their new community “South Jordan” after our heavenly leader. The early settlers were farmers who grew irrigated crops and raised livestock which helped support their families while they awaited shipmentof precious goods across the country by train or boat; these days freight trains continue to run through this scenic town but passenger service has ceased due to changes in government regulations governing railways in Utah Territory at that time. Some citizens still remember how difficult it must have been trying get along with all those other pioneers moving into what would become such an important part ofUtah culture; today many residents are proud descendants of those pioneer ancestors who helped make this place what it is today! On July 20th 1870 Joseph Smith arrived at Salt Lake City from Nauvoo Illinois carrying news that God had revealed through His Prophet Samuelthat He would soon move heaven and earth for him so he could establish an enduring kingdom on this continent which would include all America including Utah! With feelings high within him about finally fulfilling prophecy Joseph set out eastward from Nauvoo looking for Mother Church himself whereupon he met President Hyrum Smith en route on horseback near Fillmore Park outside Salt Lake City! It wasn't until September 25th 1830 when President Brigham Young received word from England via telegraph indicating that Hyrum's Brother Orson Hyde might be able to receive a revelation authorizing themto move forward with building up Zion Valley instead Carthage being proposed as site for temple! From October 14th 1830 until November 4th 1830 we heard nothing more about Zion Valley until...the saints went forth into Yorktown seeking help from Don Carlos Castilla y Ramos Governor General Mexican Republic under orders from Santa Anna!! On November 8th 1830 we learned via mail brought overland by Captain John Cushing alias John Fenton Traveling west towards Spanish Fork Missouri....it was reported by Mexicans living around hereabouts...that they saw or located two immense rocks lying near Massacre Creek according as far as eye could see...these said rocks were supposed to be parts of San Rafael Hillsite Temple Site!! After further exploration it seemed possible that these reports may have been correct so upon reaching Spanish Fork ...Captain Cook sent two parties consisting of fortyfive men commanded by Lieutenant Colonel James Kappasley across Massacre Creek bridge opposite Rock Quarry..after passing Rock Quarry they discovered four small hills just beyond reach Of River abovementioned ?? These four hills were supposed to form part of…San Rafael Hillsite Temple Site!!! Finally arriving at Spanish Fork on December 12th 1830 we found three small tracks leading down To Massacre Creek whereupon disembarked our party proceeded immediately upon landing Upon finding no water available unfollowed these tracks returned upstream another half mile taking With them Our Beverages And Supplies!!!! This event signaled beginning not only but also continuous warfare between American & Mexican forces known now as Border Wars !! In 1881 WACO topped off Apocalyptica Mine Disaster caused by flash floodwaters overflowing Roper Well ......our Red Cross director Mrs Elizabeth Dickson organized relief effort going door-to-door collecting shoes etc......One hundred fifty nine people lost their lives during Red Cross' efforts.......In 1931 SLC erected Liberty Belltower ....In 1935 SLC built US Post Office SOUTH JORDAN
South Jordan is a city in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 10,812 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1882 by Brigham Young and Jeanette Beecher as a farm town on the newly created South Jordan Road. The first post office for South Jordan was established in 1884. In 1902, the city became the site of an agricultural fair that drew attention from farmers all over central Utah. The fairgrounds were later used for other events until they were razed in 1957 to make way for the present-day Civic Center complex. In 1984, South Jordan was chosen as one of America's "50 Best Places to Live" by Newsweek magazine. That year also saw construction begin on what would become known as "The Wall", a 5-mile (8 km) long fence that encircled thecity center and separated it from neighboring Logan Valley. The project increased traffic congestion within the city limits and led to sparring between Mayor Dean Crouch and City Councilmember Jeff Sorenson over how best to reduce pollution and crime within SouthJordan while still maintaining its affordable housing values
