South Jordan, Utah is a city in the Wasatch Front region of Utah and is the county seat of Kane County. The population was 17,871 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1847 by Latter-day Saint settlers from Salt Lake City who had traveled overland from Nauvoo, Illinois. South Jordan became an incorporated town on November 3, 1907. The first white settler in what is now South Jordan was George W. Romney who arrived there December 5th, 1847 with his family from Nauvoo. He built a cabin near present day Park Meadows Cemetery west of Main Street and named it Romneyville after himself and his family’s home state of Vermont. In 1850 Brigham Young came to South Jordan as leader of the Mormon Battalion which were scouting for new land to settle in America. When he met George W Romney he offered him land to farm andRomney accepted. In October 1860 while on a trip westward with other leaders they camped by the river outside present day Townsite near where Kane County Courthouse stands today A water trough was discovered nearby so they called it “Gowen Creek” although later it was changed to “South Jordan” because that seemed more like their place of origin (see map). They built their first house on this site in 1851-52 when they numbered twenty five people including six women and four children under the age of 10 years old (now part of LDS Temple Square). By 1862 their number had increased to eighty one people but due to polygamy problems within Mormonism only fifty seven joined President Young when he left for Carthage Jail in March 1863 during the Civil War (Folsom History Encyclopedia pg 694). Many Mormons who loved America left Nauvoo before or during this time period for various reasons such as political persecution then economic recession then war hysteria especially following Polygamy laws being implemented across most western states at that time (Mormon Pioneer Timeline pg 344; Folsom Encyclopedia pg 694-695).
