In 1863, Brigham Young ordered that all Latter-day Saints be transported westward to establish Zion in what are today Colorado and Oregon Territories – including present-day Utah Territory – so that they could practice Christianity alone without any interaction with other Native Americans or Europeans. This order led to ongoing conflict between Mormons and non-Mormons over land rights throughout much of the 19th century In 1896, when South Jordan became an incorporated municipality under state law following a referendum vote by its citizens (73% in favor), the Mormon church vacated its Nauvoo Avenue temple which had been used as an administrative headquarters since 1871 but still stood unused due to lack of space; instead it moved into First Presidency House on Main Street which served as both municipal hall and church museum until 1951 when it closed due to preservation issues. That same year also saw construction begin on what would eventually become BYU's main campus across I-15 from SouthJordan Municipal Airport; this addition brought about simultaneous growth for both cities with consequent job creation for locals as well as students lodging at nearby hotels during term time only months away from classes starting up again! After years of planning and fundraising spearheaded by local businessmen John Acheson and Jack Welch (the future CEO of Wells Fargo bank) BYU finally opened its doors in 1932 thanks largely to contributions from people like Acheson (now known locally as " Mayor Acheson") along with entrepreneur Milton Bradley who donated $5 million dollars towards building materials A fire destroyed most buildings on Main Street around 1915 while the university's annex facility - built specifically for housing students' personal belongings adjacent to campus Quadrangle - continued operations relatively unscathed despite suffering several major Moldova fires two years later that destroyed much property near University Circle .
