South Jordan, Utah is a small town in Wasatch County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,879 at the 2010 census. It is located about an hour north of Salt Lake City and about an hour east of Ogden. South Jordan is part of the Provo–Ogden Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now South Jordan were Mormon pioneers who arrived in 1847. The area that would eventually become South Jordan was surveyed by Captain John C. Fremont in 1858 as part of his survey for Grant Land within the expanded Weber Territory acquired from Mexico through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. settlers started arriving around this time, including many Latter-day Saint families who had come overland from Nauvoo, Illinois during the early days of LDS Church membership there. In 1861 Brigham Young organized a company to purchase land for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) on what would become known as Temple Hill Road northeast of present day South Jordan. This company became known as the "First Family" because Brigham Young and his wife Emma were among those purchasing land there that springtime. Today's temple complex – which was dedicated on April 6, 1912 – sits just beyond where Temple Hill Road used to be and can be seen today from Interstate 15 (northwest corner). One important event that took place in the early days when South Jordan was established occurred when Jesse Smith erected a sawmill on Cedar Creek near present day Springdale Boulevard and Main Street on July 25th, 1865; it remains one of only two mills still operating in Utah today! In 1868 David Waddell built a grist mill southwest corner First Avenue and Cedar Creek with power derived from three horses running water wheels; this mill remain operational until 1956! A post office called Nibley began operations at this location on October 12th 1870 under direction from Jenson Esmond; it soon became apparent that mail service necessary for local residents wasn't possible to bring into operation due to high costs associated with postage stamps! On November 3rd 1870 Hiram Sitton purchased Mail Stop No 7 from James Hance at $500 per year - becoming Nibley's first mail carrier! Sitton operated Nibley's store until 1886 when he sold it to Elijah Meeks who operated it until 1910 then donated it to Southern Pacific Railroad which renamed it "Miles End", later "South Jordan Post Office". On May 10th 1911 General George Armstrong Custer visiting Logan walked past Miles End Post Office while en route southbound on I-15 after prevailing winds blew away all but one pole supporting the building - marking perhaps one symbolically significant event during his tenuous tenure as military dictator over much southeastern Utah
