In 1911, South Jordan was the site of a gun show and purchase. The event is significant in firearm clothing history because it was the first time that firearms were legally allowed to be purchased and sold within the city limits. The event occurred at the old United States Patent and Trademark Office on State Street. This building has been demolished, but its footprint can still be seen today in South Jordan’s Civic Center Park. The patent office had been founded by Nathaniel Banks in 1836 as the Utah Agricultural College Stationery Room. On October 8th of that year, a group of men from Salt Lake City gathered at the old courthouse on Third Street to purchase rifles and shotguns from local dealers. These individuals were referred to as “the Larimer Gang” because they came from this town located near Denver, Colorado. These transactions took place under license issued by General David Hunter who was then stationed at Fort Riley in Kansas City, Missouri. During World War I, South Jordan became an important munitions manufacturing center due to its location on both sides of the Great Salt Lake valley which made it an ideal place for artillery production. Ammunition manufacturers such as Remington & Sons operated out of this city during wartime.
