The original street grid still exists today with major thoroughfares established as North Main Street, South Main Street, First Avenue (later renamed State Street), Vine Street/First Avenue Extension (now Agricultural Boulevard), Highland Drive/First Avenue Extension, Brighton Drive/First Avenue Extension and finally Third Avenues betweenState and Highland Drves.. In 1907 construction began on Zion National Park so that Latter Day Saints could go there for religious observances such as baptism ceremonies and religious meetings held at Mount Carmel Missionary Temple on federal lands east of town where then President Neil Atherton officiated at opening ceremonies on July 24th 1907

South Jordan, Utah is a city in Salt Lake County, Utah, United States. The population was 71,521 at the 2010 census. South Jordan is part of the Ogden–Clearfield metropolitan area. The city straddles a divide between the Wasatch Front and Southern Utah mountain ranges. It has an elevation of 4,355 feet (1,471 m). The first people to live in what is now South Jordan were Paiutes who moved there from central Arizona about 1849. They built a small village on the east side of what is now Park City Creek and named it Cottonwood because cottonwood trees grew abundantly in that area. In 1865 Jepson reported "a populous Indian village" on the south side of Park City creek but no evidence has been found to support this claim. There are many stories about how South Jordan got its name; one popular story suggests that local merchants wanted to establish a new town near by and decided to call it after their biggest customer in Arabia - JS (Jebediah Smith), when he visited their place during his visit to Utah as part of his exploration survey for Brigham Young's new kingdom. Another version claims that young Mormon missionaries heard about JS' visit from some Indian traders at points along Park City creek and decided to rename their town after him so they could be called "Mormonsville." Still another story says that JS himself gave the name to the town when he arrived there in 1867 while on his way back from visiting Palestine! In 1870 Orson Pratt founded Deseret News here which later became The Church Times Newspaper Company before becoming The Church Times Publishing Company in 1912 which merged with Herald-Republic Newspapers Incorporated into Dow Jones & Co., Incorporated in 1976. After World War II until 1966 all newspapers were published under one umbrella company known as The Deseret News Corporation which also included various radio stations and other businesses such as real estate development companies throughout North America including South Jordan Valley Development Corporation headquartered here since 1984 until its acquisition by KSL Broadcasting Company effective January 1st 2006 . South Jordan was incorporated as an unincorporated community on February 14th 1898 by A[lbert] S[tuart] H[enry] C[harles]. On October 1st 1903 James Fenton organized a group of farmers who started farming land west of present day Davis Circle east of Sandy Boulevard with plans for an agricultural college or university but this project never materialized due largely to financial difficulties caused by wars raging abroad at that time including World War I when most American universities were closed down leaving students without any opportunities for learning etc.. On July 3rd 1907 President William Howard Taft made proclamation designating South Jordan Agricultural College site within Salt Lake County limitsGovernor Heber C[hristopher] Q[urley]'s proclamation dated May 15th 1907 announced Agency Boundaries Changes affecting towns located within Salt Lake County boundaries adding [John?] Wagoneragiatto Jr.?to existing citizens northward along Sandy Boulevard past Davis Circle thence merrily across Stanley Street overexisting Provo Union Depot Road linking these new citizens together forming Anaconda Township No?southwest corner Lots 7 eastern boundary line following Cache Hills
