On May 15, 1862 Brigham Young called all Mormons to Arms against Mexico and ordered them to buildfortresses along I-80 corridor as soon as possible; this order led to construction of Fort Bridger which began on October 17th of that year. On November 6th 1860 Brigham Young laid out lot 4 (today's Elmhurst Avenue) for himself and his family at what is now thirteenth street east of main square in what became known as "South Jordan". After years of growth thanks to irrigation projects completed by Mormon pioneers such as Orson Pratt (founder of Deseret Book)and John D. Rockefeller ( founder oil company Standard Oil), by 1920s South Jordan had reached its peak population with over 100 families living there sustainably producing crops for local markets while also hosting several businesses including a grocery store operated by Fenton Richardson (the father behind Richardsons Department Store). However during World War II some residents decided they no longer wanted open land adjacent their homes so they subdivided their lots into housing estates which continued up until the mid 1990s when development resumed more gradually starting with single family homes followed by apartments/condos before finally becoming one large city again around 2005 when new freeway expansions widened Main Street from its current width down to four lanes making it difficult for small businesses or pedestrians access downtown without having traffic backed up for blocks or longer
