It was named after South Jordan Station on the Great Western Railway in 1847 and has been continuously inhabited since that time by Mormons who arrived from Logan, Colorado in 1847. The first permanent settler in what became South Jordan was Lorenzo Snow on November 15, 1847. He and his family were passengers on the train from Logan to Provo when they came across land that would become the town of South Jordan. They named their new settlement after Brigham Young’s home state of Deseret – “south of the river” according to one account – but it soon attracted pioneers from other parts of Utah as well. By 1850, there were about 60 families living in SouthJordan and its environs. Missionaries began arriving soon afterward to preach Christ’s message of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ to these settlers. The growth of SouthJordan during this time was due largely to two factors: irrigation water availability and the opening of Interstate 80 which connecting Salt Lake City with Ogden made transportation more accessible than ever before. In 1955, while still part of Kane County, SouthJordan incorporated as a city under Salt Lake City ordinance No. 5555-55
