Saratoga Springs is a city in Utah, United States. The population was 7,819 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Saratoga County and home to The University of Utah. The name Saratoga Springs comes from nearby Springdale, which was founded by wagon train drivers in 1847 as a stop on their route between St. George and Provo. The area that now includes Saratoga Springs was first inhabited by the Shoshone people who lived along the Snake River before migrating west in search of new land in 1847-48. In 1859, Brigham Young purchased 320 acres (1 km²) along Main Street from James Wainwright for $50 cash and named it Springdale after his mentor, David Cranch Springate, an early settler in this region. In 1862, John Davenport organized a group of Mormon pioneers named the Davenports who arrived at Springdale from Nauvoo with handcarts and wagonsloads of goods including eleven horses and four mules worth $600 each. They began construction on what would become known as the First Presidency Building—the only building actually designed and built by Mormons—which they finished in 1863. By 1870, when LDS Church president Lorenzo Snow visited Springdale for a Sabbath sermon, he noted that "this place has been farmed out to us [Mormons] heretofore; but I venture to say it will soon be done away with." A few years later Brigham Young donated 1 acre (0·30 ha) of land on Main Street north of Fayette Square to Joseph Smith Jr., Sr., for use as an agricultural laboratory where he could study planting techniques for Farms Press seed company he started with his father-in-law Orson Hyde. In 1875, they decided to move back to Sarataga Springs and continue running their business until James Abiff's death in 1893. Their widow continued running the business until her death in 1916. Over time, many other individuals have also played important roles at Saratoga Springs - including artists such as Edward Hopper and Ezra Pound; athletes like Billy Blanchard and Jack Dempsey; businessmen such as George Romney; educators such as Laura Ingalls Wilder and Alice Paul; politicians such as Franklin D Roosevelt; and entertainers like Benny Goodman and Sammy Davis Jr.). Today, Saratoga Springs remains an unspoiled oasis with plenty of activities available for tourists including hiking (the Aspen Ridge Trail runs through town), skiing (the resorts around town offer amazing slopes), snowboarding (there are several parks with excellent park conditions), golfing (The Cloisters offers amazing courses), tennis (Rochester Hills Tennis Club has great courts), biking (Bicycles Unlimited sells great bikes), swimming (Ogden Park features wonderful water areas for swimming)and more!
On Feb. 17, 1872, a group of LDS pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley from Missouri. They were led by Brigham Young and his apostles. In that year, the Mormons first built a temple in Utah. The temple was dedicated on Feb. 27, 1872.
